Port Louis, Mauritius — Mauritius has strengthened its position as a leading Indian Ocean tourism destination, welcoming 1,436,250 international visitors in 2025, a 3.9% increase compared with 1,382,177 arrivals in 2024, according to official figures released by Statistics Mauritius. The growth highlights the continued importance of tourism to the island’s economy and international profile.
One of the sector’s key achievements was the expansion of air travel, with arrivals by air increasing by 4.7% to 1,411,791 in 2025. This performance underscores the importance of international air connectivity in supporting visitor flows to the island nation. .
Mauritius continued to attract visitors from established European markets, including France, the United Kingdom and Germany, while recording particularly strong growth from India. Indian arrivals rose by 33.5%, from 56,788 in 2024 to 75,808 in 2025. South African arrivals also increased by 3.5%, reaching 110,287.
The performance of these markets demonstrates the value of maintaining strong traditional tourism relationships while expanding the island’s reach among emerging visitor segments.
The island’s appeal extends beyond its renowned beaches and luxury resorts. Mauritius offers a broad range of experiences, including its distinctive cultural heritage, nature reserves, botanical gardens, marine activities, local cuisine and inland landscapes. Attractions such as Black River Gorges National Park, Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earths and the historic capital, Port Louis, contribute to a diverse visitor experience.
This combination of nature, culture, leisure and hospitality provides opportunities to attract different categories of travellers, from honeymooners and families to adventure seekers and visitors interested in local heritage.
Sustainable tourism remains an important development priority for Mauritius. The country’s tourism strategy has included initiatives aimed at improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impacts in accommodation and food-service operations. Regional cooperation through the Vanilla Islands Organisation has also supported discussions on sustainable tourism development and stronger regional connectivity. .
As competition among international island destinations continues, balancing tourism growth with environmental protection, service quality and benefits for local communities will remain essential to the sector’s long-term success.
With visitor arrivals rising for a second consecutive year, Mauritius enters its next phase of tourism development with positive momentum. The 2025 results highlight the resilience of its tourism market, the continued strength of air travel and the growing contribution of markets such as India.
Maintaining this progress will depend on continued investment, effective destination marketing, diversified source markets and a commitment to protecting the natural and cultural assets that make Mauritius distinctive.
