The Tourist Is Not a Prize to Be Exploited, but a Partner in Building the Economy: Turkey as a Model Worth Developing

Tourism in the modern era is no longer merely a recreational activity or a way to spend a holiday. It has become a fully integrated industry on which the economies of many countries rely as one of their most important sources of national income. Numerous countries have achieved significant economic growth by investing in this sector, capitalizing on their natural assets, historical landmarks, and cultural diversity, while simultaneously developing the infrastructure and services that allow visitors to enjoy a complete experience worth repeating.
This is why countries such as Turkey, Georgia, Albania, and other tourist destinations welcome millions of visitors every year. Many tourists—particularly those from the Gulf—return to these destinations repeatedly because of their mild summer climates, stunning landscapes, reasonable prices, geographical proximity, and cultural diversity.
Despite these considerable advantages, some negative experiences encountered by tourists have become recurring issues that deserve attention—not as a form of criticism, but out of concern for the long-term sustainability of tourism success.
One of the most frustrating issues for visitors is the unjustified increase in prices during peak tourist seasons, whether for hotels, transportation, or certain commercial activities. Such practices can create the impression that the tourist is viewed merely as an opportunity for quick profit rather than as a valued guest whose satisfaction should be protected so that they will return.
Some tourism-sector employees also remain in need of professional training in how to interact with visitors. A tourist does not remember only the hotel or restaurant; they also remember the smile, respect, speed of service, and quality of the welcome. These elements are no less important than any tourist attraction.
Another area deserving development is improving service quality in line with the prices charged. It is unacceptable for tourists to pay high prices for services that are mediocre or fall below expectations. Today, quality standards have become global benchmarks through which travelers compare different destinations.
Developing the tourist transportation system is equally essential. This includes providing licensed taxis, regulating transportation applications, monitoring their pricing, and ensuring access to safe and clean public transportation. The ease and safety with which tourists move around a destination directly influence their overall satisfaction.
Equally important is strengthening the role of tourist police, making rapid responses to tourist complaints an integral part of professional service. Multilingual contact centers and specialized field teams capable of responding quickly when needed can provide visitors with a stronger sense of safety and confidence.
It is also essential to combat the exploitation of tourists by certain individuals or businesses through strict price controls, effective penalties for violations, and requiring all establishments to display their prices clearly. Transparency and fairness are fundamental to building visitor trust.
Another important avenue for development is investing in the training of personnel working in hotels, restaurants, markets, and tourism companies. Human capital is the true face of any country, and it is capable of transforming an ordinary experience into an exceptional one.
Public cleanliness at tourist sites should also receive greater attention, alongside continuous maintenance of facilities, expansion of green spaces, and proper care of beaches and parks. These seemingly small details can make a significant difference in how visitors evaluate a destination.
Tourism-related digital applications and platforms should likewise be developed so that visitors can easily book hotels, purchase tickets, discover tourist attractions, request assistance, and submit complaints in multiple languages.
Diversifying tourism programs has also become essential. Tourism should not be limited to nature alone, but should encompass cultural, sports, medical, conference, and seasonal festival tourism. Such diversification can extend visitors’ stays and increase their spending within the country.
Destinations must also provide suitable facilities for families, children, people with disabilities, and senior citizens. Modern tourism is built on inclusive services and ensuring that destinations are accessible to all groups without exception.
Countries that have successfully built strong tourism industries have not relied on the beauty of nature alone. They have created integrated systems that begin at the airport and continue through hotels, restaurants, transportation, markets, and services—ultimately ending with the farewell smile that makes a tourist start planning their next visit before they have even left.
The tourist remains one of the best ambassadors for any country. If they leave satisfied, they will share their positive experience with their family, friends, and followers. But if they return home carrying negative experiences, the impact does not stop with one individual; it can reach thousands of potential visitors.
Therefore, the true investment in tourism is an investment in people, service quality, and respect for the visitor. These are the elements that build a destination’s reputation, sustain this vital sector, and ensure that tourists continue to arrive year after year.
