Between “News” and “Impact”: Have We Lost the Original and Clung to the Dust of Circulation?

In the blurred space between truth and illusion, news is no longer measured by the standard of accuracy, but by the magnitude of the tremor it creates within the information ecosystem.
We no longer ask, “Is this true?” We ask, “How far has it spread?”
And therein lies the dangerous turning point: the certainty of evidence has been replaced by the noise of platforms, while truth has become a digital snowball whose origins matter less than how far it can roll.
A study published in Science points to a startling reality: false news can spread up to 70% faster than the truth. We are therefore not simply facing an information crisis, but a crisis of rhythm.
A lie does not wait for verification; it enters directly through the gateway of emotion, while truth struggles through the corridors of fact-checking.
This reality deepens what philosopher Lee McIntyre, in his book Post-Truth, describes as ideological supremacy, whereby digital environments reshape our awareness according to what we want to believe, rather than what we ought to believe. In this environment, repetition becomes an argument, while a trending topic begins to resemble a court that issues verdicts without appeal.
Journalism today finds itself facing an existential dilemma: the race for the scoop—or disappearance.
The click economy does not necessarily reward accuracy; it rewards excitement. And so, breaking news runs over truth beneath the wheels of speed, while corrections arrive late and faint—like an apology in an empty room.
The paradox is harsh: what is fixed on the screen is not necessarily fixed in reality. Indeed, what becomes entrenched in collective memory is often the first version, regardless of how fragile or misleading it may have been.
Truth, however, does not submit to the logic of the majority, nor is it settled by the number of likes. It is a structure of knowledge built upon evidence, not echo.
Falsehood remains falsehood, even when repeated to the point of exhaustion. And truth remains truth, even when it remains on the margins.
It is no longer enough to produce truth; we must also protect it from the mechanisms that distort it.
This equation rests on three pillars:
Audience Awareness: Sharing is not a neutral act; it can amplify an error.
Source Primacy: The value of news lies in its origin, not in how widely it spreads.
Digital Restraint: Verification is not a luxury of time; it is an ethical condition of publishing.
In a world where impact grows louder while origins fade, the responsibility of journalism—and of the audience alike—is to restore evidence as the ultimate standard of truth.
We do not need more news.
We need more integrity in how we filter it.
Between virality and permanence, truth remains in only one place:
Where the evidence stands—not where the noise rises.
